Аннотация: In the theoretical interpretation of the kinetics of first-order phase transitions, thermodynamic concepts developed long ago by Gibbs are widely employed giving some basic qualitative insights into these processes. However, from a quantitative point of view, the results of such analysis, based on the classical Gibbs approach and involving in addition the capillarity approximation, are often not satisfactory. Some progress can be reached here by the van der Waals and more advanced density functional methods of description of thermodynamically heterogeneous systems having, however, its limitations in application to the interpretation of experimental data as well. Moreover, both mentioned theories—Gibbs’ and density functional approaches—lead to partly contradicting each other’s results. As shown in preceding papers, by generalizing Gibbs’ approach, existing deficiencies and internal contradictions of these two well-established theories can be removed and a new generally applicable tool for the interpretation of phase formation processes can be developed. In the present analysis, a comparative analysis of the basic assumptions and predictions of the classical and the generalized Gibbs approaches is given. It is shown, in particular, that—interpreted in terms of the generalized Gibbs approach—the critical cluster as determined via the classical Gibbs approach corresponds not to a saddle but to a ridge point of the appropriate thermodynamic potential hypersurface. By this reason, the classical Gibbs approach (involving the classical capillarity approximation) overestimates as a rule the work of critical cluster formation in nucleation theory and, in general, considerably.

Аннотация: The asymptotic behavior of the second B and third C virial coefficients in the low temperature region is analyzed for fluids with a spherical pair-additive potential of interparticle interaction. The temperature dependences B( T) and C( T) are approximated by expressions which convey correctly the behavior of the virial coefficients in the low-and high-temperature limits. The free parameters of approximation formulas for pure nitrogen, argon, and oxygen are determined. The derived virial equations of state are used to calculate the limit of significant instability of the gas phase in a wide temperature range.

Аннотация: The influence of the space charge of ions emitted from the surface of a conical spike on its shape has been studied. The problem of the calculation of the spatial distributions of the electric field, ion velocity field, and the space charge density near the cone tip has been reduced to the analysis of a system of ordinary differential equations. As a result of numerical solution of these equations, the criterion for the balance of the capillary and electrostatic forces on the conic surface of a liquid-metal anode has been determined. It has allowed us to relate the electrical current flowing through the system, the applied potential difference, and the cone angle. We have compared the results of our calculations with available experimental data concerning emission from the surface of pure liquid gallium, indium, tin, and some liquid alloys, such as Au+Si, Co+Ge, and Au+Ge. On the basis of the proposed model, explanations have been given for a number of specific features of the emissive behavior of different systems.

Аннотация: Compression adiabats for alumina-based nanopowders are obtained experimentally, various conditions of pulsed magnetic cylindrically symmetric radial compaction of the nanopowders are tested, and the density distribution in the compacted powders are measured. Using the compression adiabats obtained, quasi-static compaction of a granulated (porous) medium, which is considered to be compact, is simulated. The conditions of uniform and equilibrium compaction on a rigid rod are analyzed. The voidage distribution, stress tensor, and amount of accumulated deformation are calculated. The features of nanopowder compaction, specifically, the presence (absence) of voidage nonuniform radial distribution, are explained.

Аннотация: The influence of the space charge of ions evaporated from the surface of a conical spike that develops on a liquid-metal anode on the spike shape has been studied theoretically. A possibility of the self-similar reduction of the equations that govern the space distributions of the electric field, ion velocity field, and space charge density to a system of ordinary differential equations has been revealed. Its solution, which is compatible with the balance condition for the capillary and electrostatic forces at a free liquid surface, has allowed us to obtain the current-voltage characteristic for a liquid-metal ion source and the current dependence of the cone angle. An increase in emission current leads to a monotonic decrease of the cone angle, which agrees with the available experimental data.

Аннотация: The effect of long-range interactions on the surface tension at a liquid-gas interface was considered. An analytical expression for the correction to the surface tension for the cutoff of the particle interaction potential at the distance r(c) was derived based on a step density profile. For the Lennard-Jones fluid, this correction was calculated numerically from the results of computer simulations of the density profiles. It was established that, in the vicinity of the triple point, the correction is as great as similar to 6% at the potential cutoff radius r(c) = 6.78 molecular diameters, a quantity insensitive to the form of the density profile in the interfacial layer

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of experimental investigations of nucleation in helium-oxygen gas-filled mixtures. Temperature dependences of the mean lifetime of a mixture in the metastable (superheated) state have been determined, and nucleation rates have been calculated by experiments at fixed pressures of 1.171 and 1.667 MPa and at several values of concentrations. Experimental data are compared with results of the homogeneous nucleation theory in a macroscopic (capillary) approximation and with allowance for the dependence of the properties of nuclei on the curvature of their dividing surface. The size effect of nucleation is taken into account in the framework of the van der Waals, Cahn-Hilliard method. The equation of state of the mixture has been built, and the boundary of stability of homogeneous states, the diffusion spinodal, has been determined. The paper discusses the problems of building a nucleation theory for gas-filled mixtures and states a good agreement between theory and experiment at nucleation rates J similar or equal to 10(7) m(-1) s(-1) when the size effect in nucleation is taken into account

Аннотация: A comparative analysis of the results of determination of the work of critical cluster formation in nucleation theory for three different methods of evaluation—Gibbs' method, the van der Waals-Cahn and Hilliard, and a newly developed modified Gibbs' approach—is given. As a model system for comparison, regular solutions are chosen. In addition to the work of critical cluster formation, the composition of the critical clusters, their characteristic sizes and the values of the surface tension are determined in dependence on the initial supersaturation in the system or, equivalently, on the size of the critical clusters. It is found, in particular, that, for regular solutions, Tolman's equation cannot serve as a first approximation for the description of the curvature dependence of the surface tension even for large cluster sizes and an alternative formula is developed. It is shown that the latter two mentioned methods of determination of the work of critical cluster formation (the van der Waals-Cahn and Hilliard and the modified Gibbs' approach) lead—at least for the model system considered—to qualitatively and partly quantitatively equivalent results. Nevertheless, differences remain which may lead to quantitative deviations when applied to the determination of the steady-state nucleation rates. The possible origin of such deviations is discussed and some further directions of analysis are anticipated

Аннотация: The prospects of application of a mechanical model in describing the properties of planar and curved interfaces at low temperatures are investigated. It is shown that, in the framework of such approach, the Tolman length determining the first-order curvature correction to the surface tension, γ, is equal to zero. In the range of small values of the radius of curvature, R, the mechanical approach overestimates considerably the value of γ. For the Lennard-Jones potential the non-analyticity in the dependence γ(1/R) is found at 1/R = 0. It disappears for potentials decreasing more rapidly with the distance between the particles

Аннотация: The dependence of surface tension on curvature is investigated for the case of an equilibrium phase coexistence in multicomponent systems. Employing Gibbs's method of description of heterogeneous systems, an equation is derived to determine the dependence of surface tension on curvature for widely arbitrary paths of variation of the independent thermodynamic parameters. It is supposed hereby merely that the temperature is kept constant and that the variations of the different molar fractions are such that the radius of the dividing surface varies monotonically in dependence on the change of the state parameters of the ambient phase along any of the chosen paths. In the analysis, an approach developed by Blokhuis and Bedeaux for one-component systems is utilized. It relies on the expansion of the surface free energy on curvature of the dividing surface. An equation is derived that connects the first-order correction term in the expansion with the interaction potential of the particles in the multicomponent solution and with the two-particle distribution functions in the planar interfacial layer between the two phases coexisting in equilibrium at planar interfaces. The connection of the first-order curvature correction to the surface tension and the first moment of the pressure tensor at a planar interface is analyzed as well

Аннотация: A comparative analysis of the results of determination of the work of critical cluster formation in nucleation theory for three different methods of evaluation—Gibbs’ method (employing the capillarity approximation), the van der Waals–Cahn and Hilliard and a newly developed modified Gibbs’ approach—is given in application to phase formation in multicomponent systems. As an example, processes of boiling in binary liquid–gas solutions, in particular, in nitrogen–helium mixtures are investigated. In addition to the work of critical cluster formation, the bulk properties of the critical bubbles, their characteristic sizes and the values of the surface tension are determined in dependence on the initial supersaturation in the system or, equivalently, on the size of the critical clusters. It is shown that latter two mentioned methods (the van der Waals–Cahn and Hilliard and the modified Gibbs’ approach) lead, in the determination of the work of critical cluster formation, to qualitatively and widely even quantitatively equivalent results. As one of the more general consequences from the present analysis, it has been proven that the modified Gibbs’ approach represents a highly effective tool for the determination of the work of formation of clusters or bubbles of critical sizes not only for one-component and quasibinary systems, discussed earlier, but for phase formation in multicomponent systems of, in general, arbitrary numbers of components as well. It is shown that the modified Gibbs’ approach is preferable as compared with Gibbs’ original treatment not only due to its advantages with respect to an appropriate determination of the properties of clusters of critical sizes, but also from general theoretical considerations. In the limit of large sizes of the critical clusters, both approaches—Gibbs’ original treatment and the modified or generalized Gibbs’ approach—lead to equivalent results

Аннотация: Computer experiments are performed on the determination of thermodynamic properties and structural characteristics of the Lennard-Jones fluid in one- and two-phase models to check the basic concepts of the van der Waals theory of capillarity. Calculations are performed using molecular dynamics method. It is shown that, at T* 1.1, the properties of flat interface can be described, within the limits of computer experiment error, in terms of the van der Waals gradient theory with the density-independent influence parameter . The account of density dependence of via the second moment of direct correlation function deteriorates the agreement between the theory and the data of computer simulation. The contribution of inhomogeneous system of higher (than ()2) terms to the Helmholtz free energy of inhomogeneous system is considered. It is shown that the account of terms proportional to ()4 does not lead to the agreement between the theory and the data of computer simulation, whereas the consideration of terms proportional to ()6 makes it possible to describe (with a good accuracy) all the properties of flat interface within the temperature range from triple point to the critical one
