Аннотация: The kinetics of explosive boiling-up of liquid argon has been investigated at negative pressures created by the reflection of a compression pulse 3–5 µs long from the free surface of a liquid by the method of liquid pulse heating on a thin platinum wire (with a rate of temperature increase of about 1 K/µs). The limiting superheats T* (stretches p*), the effective nucleation rate J*, and the derivative GT=(d ln J/dT)T=T* have been determined by experimental data on the thermal perturbation of a wire probe and the results of solution of the problem on the initial stage of explosive boiling-up of a liquid. The experimental data are compared with homogeneous nucleation theory.

Аннотация: This paper considers two approaches to estimating the life of specimens: kinetic strength theory and homogeneous nucleation theory. Using aluminum as an example, it is shown that homogeneous nucleation theory overestimates the real life of tensile metal specimens by two order of magnitude and gives values close to the theoretical strength of metals. The use of experimental data on the lifetime of a superheated and stretched liquid (hexane) allows one to couple both approaches taking into account the time scale of occurrence of metastability.

Аннотация: The kinetics of explosive cavitation has been studied by experiment in helium-saturated liquid argon. Measurements have been made by the method of pulse heating of a solution on a thin platinum wire in a negative-pressure wave. The temperature dependence of cavitation strength has been traced, the effective values of the nucleation rate J and the derivative dlnJ/dT have been determined. It has been found that the dissolution of helium results in decreasing cavitation strength of argon. Satisfactory agreement between data of homogeneous nucleation theory and experiment with the use of capillarity approximation in the latter, though limiting stretches (superheats) attained by experiment are nevertheless systematically lower than calculated ones

Аннотация: The cavitation strength of liquids has been studied at atmospheric pressure by applying tensile stress pulses of duration up to 3 μs and amplitude up to 20 MPa within the temperature range from room temperature to the temperature of explosive boiling-up of the liquid. At high temperatures, where in absolute value the tensile strength does not exceed 1-2 times the critical pressure, agreement between classical nucleation theory and experiment is observed within the experimental error. With a decrease of the temperature the tensile strength of the liquid increases, but the experimental values of the breaking strength are lower than those predicted from theory. The dependence of the degree of discrepancy between theory and experiment on the number of atoms in the molecules of the liquids investigated is shown
