Аннотация: A new interpretation of properties of high-temperature protonic conductors based on the proton polaron idea is proposed. Mobility of protons in these materials is viewed as a result of phonon-activated jumps. A comparison with the experimental data is made. It follows that the proton polaron effect can be really large enough in these perovskite-structured solid solutions

Аннотация: A perovskite-structured solid solution BaCe1-xErxO3 at high doping level was demonstrated to have percolation properties. In the special case that this system is partitioned into a mixture of two phases whose fractions vary with concentration of Er ions, the anomalous behavior of protonic conduction is explained by the existence of a percolation threshold near x = 0.3

Аннотация: It is suggested that a charge carrier transport in superionic conductors may follow an anomalous (e.g., superdiffusive) mechanism owing to effects of the fractality and the clustering. An anomalous penetration of "hot" deuterium ions (D of about 100 keV) in doped SrCeO3-type oxides can be modeled by using a diffusion-like equation with fractional derivatives in place of commonly used Fick's law. A tail exponent gamma for concentration distribution in proton conductors is introduced. A comparison with experimental data is made

TRANSPORT PROPERTIES -- DIFFUSION
Аннотация: Optical theorem formulation of the Kramers’ problem is proposed. A new technique to estimate the rate of escape in the Kramers model is developed, making use of analyticity relations analogous to those of the scattering amplitude appearing in particle physics. The formalism is shown to provide a very short derivation of the Mel'nikov–Meshkov solution for energy distribution functions in the barrier region, because of analyticity requirements alone. When the escape event is viewed as a causal one, appropriate analytic functions yielding the rate constant obey some relations in the Fourier space very analogous to those of the Kramers and Kronig for the dielectric function. While it seems to be rather a simplistic description, it reveals a linkage between the refractive index and the superionic conduction. We briefly discuss other relevant aspects as the ac conductivity of ionic solids and relationships between the activation energy of superionic conductors and dielectric constant quite similar with those reported by Wakamura (JPCS, 59 (1998) 591).

Аннотация: This communication is inspired by recent results on the observation of “giant” rates for proton transfer in rutile TiO2 at low temperatures in pump-probe experiments. An important point is that this is not a tunneling effect. We show that this classical looking effect has a quantum mechanical origin and may be called lattice-assisted hopping. To explore the possibility of formulating transport properties in terms of mode vibrations, we use a “quantum” fluctuation–dissipation theorem, thus providing a concept of dynamic activation energy for ion hopping, which had been used in the above experimental study, rather heuristically, to fit the low-temperature “over the barrier” motion data. The resulting expression of hopping activation energy is more general than the standard one defined in units of kBT and is able to describe the crossover from the high to low-temperature regime of proton jumps.

ЭЛЕКТРООСАЖДЕНИЕ -- РАФИНИРОВАНИЕ -- СПЛАВЫ
Аннотация: Stimulated diffusion of protons in oxides such as ABO3 crystals and rutile TiO2 is discussed in the context of quantum Brownian motion. A self-consistent lattice-assisted proton hopping (LAPH) model is developed by going from white noise (characteristic of the standard stochastic theory of superionic conduction) to colored noise in the Markovian limit. This model differs from the commonly used ion jump models in that the hydrogen diffusion rate prefactor is identified as a quantity proportional to the frequency of phonon assistance. Application of the quantum fluctuation–dissipation theorem suggests that the dynamic activation energy for diffusion is a function of a bath-mode frequency. The LAPH model can predict enhanced rates of barrier jumping at room temperature compared to thermally activated proton diffusion. This indicates that low-temperature solid oxide devices are potential candidates for use in hydrogen energy research. The LAPH model offers a valid explanation for the mechanism of high protonic mobility recently observed for TiO2 in a picosecond transient pump-probe experiment. This unexpected dominant lattice relaxation channel must be considered as a new classical-like (but low-temperature) proton transfer mechanism. For vibration-assisted protonic jumps to occur at low temperature, the phonon assistance must be classified as a low-frequency vibration specific to each lattice

Аннотация: A method of decreasing the operating temperature of devices based on proton-hopping transport is considered, which is new in the field of solid-oxide fuel cells. It is shown that the room-temperature rate of proton-hopping transport in rutile-type oxides can be sharply increased in a sample excited by resonant infrared radiation.

ТОПЛИВНЫЕ ЭЛЕМЕНТЫ -- ПЕРЕНОС ПРОТОННЫЙ
Аннотация: This study examines potential benefits of adopting ultrashort optical pulses in fuel cell technology. General principles for jumping migration of protons in resonant laser fields have been elaborated. We find that, depending upon the frequency of phonon assistance, the effective activation energy for migration can be strongly diminished when excitation pulses are used. The obtained results indicate that at room temperature the picosecond-laser-induced proton transfer in rutile type oxides is much faster than that for thermal activation. Our estimates are in good agreement with time-resolved measurements for rutile samples excited by infrared light. The fundamentals of this transfer process are briefly analyzed in the light of structure diffusion and vibrational mode models. The most important conclusion to emerge from our work is that the use of the optical stimulation shows considerable promise as a means for decreasing the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells based on proton hopping transport.
