Аннотация: A new cubic perovskite-like vanadium bronze of composition Na0.25Cu0.75VO3, with a lattice parameter of 7.2517(1) Å, is obtained by reacting NaVO3, V2O5, and Cu2O at 1100°C and 8 GPa. It exhibits metallic conduction, with a sharp change in resistivity above 200°C, and, presumably, undergoes a phase transition near 280°C. The thermal properties of the new vanadium bronze are studied in air and helium at normal pressure

Аннотация: Band structure of a novel superconductor—magnesium diboride—is studied by the self-consistent FP-LMTO method. Density of states near the Fermi level of MgB2 and its electronic properties are governed by the metallike boron 2p orbitals in the planar network of boron atoms. The modification of the band structure of MgB2 upon doping the boron (with Be, C, N, and O substitutional impurities) and the magnesium (with Be, Ca, Li, and Na substitutional impurities) sublattices or upon the introduction of structural vacancies (boron nonstoichiomety) is analyzed. The electronic structures of MgB2 and hypothetical CaB2 are also studied as functions of pressure

Аннотация: Pbl- xWxO2 x(OH)x (0 < X --< 0.30) solid solutions with the rutile structure were prepared by reacting humid [3-PbO 2 + V205 mixtures at temperatures from 200 to 250~ At higher vanadium contents, lead hexavanadate, PbV6Ol6 , was formed, as inferred from IR spectroscopy data. The structural and electrical properties of the solid solutions were studied, and the valence state of the constituent ions was determined. All of the vanadium has a valence of 4+ for x < 0.06 and 5+ for x > 0.15. The lead ions are in the oxidation states 4+ and 2+ over the entire range of solid solution

Аннотация: The effect of disorder induced by neutron irradiation in a nuclear reactor (thermal neutron fluence 1x 10(19) cm–2) on the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the upper critical field Hc2 of polycrystalline MgB2 samples was investigated. Despite the appreciable radiation-induced distortions (more than ten displacements per atom), the initial crystal structure (C32) was retained. The temperature Tc decreased from 38 to 5 K upon irradiation and was practically completely restored after the subsequent annealing at a temperature of 700°C. A weak change in the dHc2/dT derivative upon irradiation is explained by the fact that the irradiated samples are described by the “pure” limit of the theory of disordered superconductors. The suppression of Tc upon disordering may be due to the isotropization of the originally anisotropic (or multicomponent) superconducting gap or to a decrease in the density of electronic states at the Fermi level

Аннотация: A new series of promising luminescent materials, cyclosilicates Sr3R2(Si3O9)2, R=Y, Eu–Lu, has been synthesized via a solid-state reaction. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction studies show that these oxides crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system (S.G. C2/c, Z=4) and have a morphotropic phase transition between Er and Tm compounds followed by a step-like change of the unit cell constants. Isolated [Si3O9] rings located in layers are basic building units and stack with Sr/R layers along the [1 0 ] direction. The rare earth atoms are distributed among three independent Sr/R sites coordinated by 8, 7 and 6 oxygen atoms, and the Sr-R populations change from mixed to 0.5/0.5 over site (1) and full occupation of sites (2) and (3) by Sr and R, respectively, at the transition. Changes of the conformation and mutual arrangement of [Si3O9] rings, as well as exchange of oxygen atoms from the first and the second coordination sphere of two Sr/R sites also feature the phase transition. Luminescence in Sr3Y2(Si3O9)2:Eu3+ under ultraviolet (UV) excitation has been discussed
